Starbucks coffee was named after a character in which famous novel?
Brave New World
Lord of the Flies
Moby-Dick
To Kill a Mockingbird
********
Answer: You might remember from a high school English class that Starbuck was the first mate in Herman Melville’s novel “Moby-Dick.” Gordon Bowke, who co-founded Starbucks in 1971, wanted to name the company Peqoud, after Captain Ahab’s doomed whaleship in the Moby-Dick. Fortunately, one of his business partners rejected the name, so they decided to name the fledgling coffee chain after Starbuck, the first mate of the Pequod. Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse chain in the world, with over 34,000 stores in 80 countries around the globe.
