I sent this into the MetroWest Daily News:
To the Editor,
As a native of Sudbury, an individual with cerebral palsy, and someone who works in disability policy, the rejection of a motion to force Mike Hugo’s resignation in the wake of his eugenicist comments about children with disabilities by the Framingham Democratic Committee speaks volumes. It is worth noting that Hugo NEVER said his remarks were wrong, he merely expressed sorrow that his remarks caused offense. To add insult to injury, after the motion failed, he issued a gaslighting statement painting himself as a “caring Democrat” that was shown “understanding and empathy” by the Democratic Committee, as if somehow he is the victim of this entire situation, and said “We have to move past this,” as if this is all some giant distraction from the more crucial mission of electing more “caring Democrats” like himself.
In 1989-1990, I was part of a pilot program that integrated several students with disabilities into a mainstream classroom at Peter Noyes Elementary in Sudbury. Today, I am a 36-year-old master’s-educated lobbyist, husband, and father of four. I apologize to Mr. Hugo for being such a “burden” on the Sudbury School Department.
Despite their efforts to distance themselves from Hugo’s remarks, it appears the majority of the Committee members are not bothered enough by his views (which again, Hugo never said were wrong) to remove him from leadership. Imagine if Hugo had made similar remarks about ANY other minority group?
“Caring” for some, but certainly not all.
