After its release, it became the highest-grossing film of all time until it was surpassed by Gone With the Wind in 1940. The film was nominated for Best Musical Score at the Academy Awards in 1938, and the next year, Shirley Temple presented Walt Disney with a special Academy Award consisting of one normal-sized Oscar and seven dwarf Oscar statuettes.
