I once had a 2000 VW with a diesel engine & 5 speed manual transmission. It got 50+ mpg. Even though its fuel tank held only 10 gallons, I could still go 500 miles between fill ups. That's the distance from New York City to Columbus, Oh; Boston to Buffalo; St. Louis to Jackson, MS; or San Diego t... View More

‌ My problem was that I could not find a diesel mechanic who was willing to work on it. I basically gave it away in 2017 with about 235,000 miles on it. It needed a new starter. And I had lost 5th gear. But no regular car mechanic would touch it.

Disclaimer: I’m an Amsoil dealer. Too bad we didn’t know each other and live close, would have gladly worked on your vehi... View More

I‌ gave my diesel car to one of my neighbors. This was back in Sept or Oct of 2017. She had twin girls, who were seniors in HS, & they were both taking auto shop at the time. They were able to fix the starter. Not sure if they were able to fix the transmission. But the 2 of them shared... View More

‌. Great outcome then! My opinion, diesel far easier to work on/with than gas. We say: real vehicles don’t have spark plugs!

T‌he only other car that I've had which got ~50 mpg was a 2002 Toyota Prius hybrid. Other cars of its size only got ~35 mpg. Apparently using an electric motor in conjunction with a gas engine can increase fuel efficiency by 50%. Some people opted for a double battery pack. This then do... View More

‌ I often thought why not have a gas/diesel or propane generator of appropriate size, maybe with battery to run the vehicle. A generator running at constant speed far more efficient than an ice engine. Should be great mileage.
