Flags of the American Revolution: The "Appeal to Heaven" Flag was originally approved for Revolutionary maritime war use by General George Washington on October 21, 1775. Soon however, it gained favor with the surrounding communities who sought to display their faith and an expression of solidarity with the war effort and people began making homemade versions of the flag.
