This... Juneteenth is the "longest-running African-American holiday". It recalls and celebrates June 19, 1865, as the date that news of slavery's end reached slaves in Galveston Texas. Galvestonians, and other citizens of Texas have celebrated the date as a holiday ever since. It spread to other states through word-of-mouth, and with the movement of families into and out of Texas. It finally became an "official" holiday in 2021.
