The story of Purim is found in the Book of Esther and commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia (Iran). It’s through orphaned Esther/Hadassah that Yah brings salivation to the Jewish people. When her Uncle Mordichai presents her with the possibility of saving her people, he tells her, “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14).
Purim celebrates Yah/God’s intimate involvement in every aspect of His people. Even though there were no overt miracles recorded in the Megillah (The Story of Esther) — Yah’s name is not even mentioned once — He was actively working in the events to care for His nation.
The Book of Esther reads like a melodrama. A drunken King Achashverosh brags about his beautiful Queen Vashi. He commands her to appear before him, but she refuses. Achashverosh’s men go house to house looking for a new more beautiful queen. They find a beautiful Jewish orphan, Esther/Hadassah.
Esther’s Uncle Mordechai heard two men outside the palace plotting to kill the king. He reported this to Esther and the king’s life was spared. King Achashveosh appointed Haman as his new prime minister. The king’s subjects were ordered to bow to Haman, but Mordecai refused. Haman built gallows to have Mordechai hung.
Haman convinced the king to give a decree to kill all the Jews. Uncle Mordechai went to Esther and told her she must go to the king and ask that the Jews be saved. In the end, it was Haman hung on the gallows, Mordechai and Esther were honored and the Jews were saved. Yah be praised!
