View MoreTHE BOOK OF REVELATION WHITE HORSE A.D. 96-180 Rome’s victorious imperialism The white horse represents the Roman Empire during the time of her political imperialism and military expansion. The bow held by this white horse rider represents the militaristic policy and activities of the emperors and their vast armies spread throughout the empire. The Roman Empire extended its borders to include the old empires of Babylon, Medo-Persia and Greece. The white horse represents the white horses that were ridden by the Roman Emperors in their military victory celebrations. RED HORSE A.D. 185-284 Roman civil wars – Rome had 32 emperors and 27 pretenders. The red horse represented the Roman Empire during the time of internal political turmoil. This was a time of civil wars when many rivals desired the position of emperor. There were over 30 different emperors holding this office for short periods of time because of being deposed or assassinated by their successor. This was the beginning of internal decay and eventual collapse of the empire. Many pretenders to the throne would arise and muster their own army and would fight one another. This is typified in the Scripture by the color red which denotes bloodshed. John also says that peace shall be taken from the earth, which resulted in the death of many. John summarizes the description of the rider of the red horse as one who possesses the great sword. BLACK HORSE A.D. 200-250 Heavy taxation and depression The black horse represents a period of time in Roman history of economic depression, heavy taxation and high inflation. John describes the rider of the black horse as one who “had a pair of balances in his hand.” This would be an immediate indication of the scarcity of food, especially with the mention of wheat and barley. The mention of the balances would also indicate state control of commerce. In order for the Roman Empire to finance their wars they demanded a high land tax, and heavy contributions of corn, wheat, wine and oil. This eventually ruined their agriculture which resulted in famine. This black horse represents the gross despair and gloom of the Roman citizens because of famine and extremely high imperial taxation. PALE HORSE A.D. 250-300 Famine and Disease The pale horse represented the general conditions of decay and death. These conditions were a result of wide spread famine and disease. This was a period of time in Roman history of political instability, moral decay and social havoc. The Roman Empire was therefore subject to outside attacks by various invaders which eventually resulted in its final collapse. The name of this pale horse rider was none other than Death, which represents famine, disease, plagues, malnutrition, and starvation for thousands of Roman citizens. This rider was followed by Hell which referred to the grave because of vast numbers of both citizens and subjects of the Empire that perished during this time. Some historians say that at least ¼ of the people died. This would be in fulfillment of the prophecy that “power was given unto them over the fourth part of the [Roman] earth”. Through the prophet Ezekiel, the God of all justice let it be known to His people Israel that His four sore judgements of famine (drought), noisome beasts (foreign invaders), sword (war), and pestilence (disease) are His means of severe punishment (Ez. 14:12-21). Whether it be a nation or an empire that sets itself against the Lord and His anointed, He is able to bring them to utter desolation by these four means (Psa. 2). This very thing happened to the Roman Empire because of their severe persecution and martyrdom of multiplied thousands of righteous saints. What is the mark of the beast? It is the mentality of the beast. Just total obedience to what the beastly system tells us to believe; what we think in our foreheads. We do what the beast tells us to do and we have the mark in our hands. Those that receive the mark of the beast are destined for the judgement of God. (The Book of Revelation, by Pastor Charles A. Jennings, pages 155-158, 170) Page 58 – Antichrist – Antichrist is not some future individual which will be the epitome of all evil, but was and is a religious belief system whose main premise is the denial of the doctrine of the incarnation of God in flesh as recorded in John 1:14. That religious belief system is none other than Judaism which was opposed to Jesus Christ in His earthly ministry. Judaism and its vicious leadership continued their opposition to the gospel throughout the Apostolic age and has continued their struggle against Biblical Christianity to this day. Many of the leaders of the Protestant Reformation were correct when they identified the Papal power of Rome as Antichrist. The Roman Catholic Church is the historical seat of religious Babylon and the mother of harlots which are the (pseudo Protestant) denominational daughters (Rev. 17)
