Hugo, along with several other people, was captured at his house by Pinochet's thugs on January 27th. The captives were accused of conspiring against the government, because they were listening to a forbidden audiotape. According to the official version Pinochet's regime released, Hugo, despite being blind, somehow managed to hang himself in his cell on the 31st... after torture extensive enough that the marks showed in the autopsy. Beware of those who praise Augusto Pinochet. They may talk about fighting Communism, but there are plenty of anti-Communists who never had mass torture facilities. Pinochet's loudest fans, all too often, have chosen him not because they think his acts were justified - but because they think it sounds like fun.
