A Culture of Life
The word “life” is used more than 500 times in the Bible. You might say that the God’s Word promotes a culture of life. Someone else would point out that the Bible also uses the word “death” about 450 times. But most of those times are either telling of someone’s death, or contrasting death with life in a way that promotes a culture of life instead of a culture of death.
Those of us who have been involved in the “pro-life” movement would like to ask our law-makers, “Wouldn’t you rather promote a culture of life than a culture of death?” You fight to promote what you call a “woman’s right to choose”, but in that option someone usually dies. If, instead, you fought for the pro-life side, no one would have to die. Wouldn’t you rather stand before God on the Day of Judgment having taken a stand for life instead?
In an odd kind of way, the arguments in favor of abortion rights can also be made in favor of other kinds of murder.
1) One argument made to me says, “The earth is facing overpopulation”. Carry that thought out to its logical end and see what you get. What prevents us from eliminating not just the unborn, but also many of the already-born?
2) Another one says, “It should be a woman’s right to choose”. Carry that argument out and see what horrors you get. Logic would dictate that you can’t even take away her right to choose after the baby is born so decides she doesn’t like its gender or it hair color. The truth is that the law can take away the so-called “woman’s right to choose” any time before, or after, the birth. Then why not preserve the life of the baby before birth rather than after?
3) Another argument is that preventing abortions “takes away the rights of women to have control over their own bodies.” But keep in mind, half of the babies aborted are girls. You want to defend the rights of women? Then defend all of them.
4) The last bit of reason goes out the window when you say something like, “We don’t really know when life begins”. President Obama once famously said, “Knowing when life begins is above my pay grade”. What utter nonsense. Every pregnant woman knows that what is growing inside her is a human life. Not a mass of cells. Not just fetal tissue. But a human baby. If she chooses to abort, it’s not because she doesn’t want a mass of cells, it’s because she doesn’t want a baby.
I don’t know if any lawmakers will ever listen to the common sense of the pro-life arguments, but maybe, just maybe if there is a girl out there who is contemplating abortion, I want you to know that what is growing inside you is a beautiful child created in the image of God, and I would ask you to preserve its life and see what great things he/she will do.
