Gentle Folks, we talk about a lot here on RO. Perhaps lets reflect for a moment on American Greatness. We hear about excellence of German Engineering, we hear about Swiss Watches. The attached photograph is that of a Baldwin Yellowstone. 113 feet long, weighed about 566 tons (that's about as much as 14 loaded Semi Trucks). Now, have you ever had to push your car or truck out of an intersection and been glad to have someone to help you? Well, these monsters were so precise and finely crafted that it only took a couple of men to move them around the yard. A salute to the men who designed them and the men who built them. With that thought, I'm to a short nap.

My train admiration is one of my first memories. When I grew up I was going to be an engineer. I won’t bore y’all with all the many childhood memories and experiences I had with trains. Fast forward I didn’t become an engineer but I’ve been in the cab of a beauty like the one pictured.

I don’t think either but possibly. Dad has been gone 6 years and this question falls under the many “let me ask daddy questions” that come up very often. The locomotive would have still been in limited service after my birth year 1955 and my earliest memories were around age 3. The one pict... View More

Harrell Jr UP operated the Big Boys. Very much like the Yellowstone with a few minor differences and one major difference. They Big Boys had larger drivers (68" ) vs the Yellowstones (63" ) and a slightly larger grate. The Big Boy's had a higher top end at 80 mph but the Yellowstones had more "Gr... View More

Imagine the monster at the age 4 or 5. Whichever monster it was stopped at the depot here in town. The engineers came down. I had a thing about the wheels. I got to touch each wheel from front to back on the near side. Then he took me and dad up. Check first thing off my bucket list at aged 4.

I did a search and have been reading stats on the top ten. Back to your original point, absolutely this was an amazing achievement of the U.S.

Harrell Jr A lot of arguement to this day Yellowstone vs Big Boy. Baldwin tried a couple of X-8-8-8-X's with 24 drivers but they were disappointing. Grate's were too small and even then, difficult to tend. Pull a massive load from a start but once your steam pressure dropped off, well.

If you go to the wiki page, there is still one doing excursions. You can put it back on your bucket list, lol.
