41 years ago today, Brigadier Lucarelli was murdered by the Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari - an extremist group that targeted law enforcement, the Italian state, and everyday Italians.
You would expect that the Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari would be shut down by now, and you would be right - but many who were involved with NAR or TP (Terza Posizione, a NAR-affiliated group. The name means 'Third Position' in English) fled justice, and Europe's law enforcement was not so tightly integrated then. Onetime Terza Posizione activist Roberto Fiore waited out the statute of limitations for his role in the group's crimes among the British criminal underground, mentoring members of British extremist groups. After his return to Italy, he got involved in politics once more - this time under the banner of "Forza Nuova" (New Force). Today, Fiore is once more facing legal problems - this time, for organizing violent riots.
