The Marine standing watch did not know my Step Mother. He wasn’t asked or told he needed to be there. I believe he read the obituary, saw that she had served in the Marines and took it upon himself to come. He asked very politely if I or anyone would mind if he stood guard, because we never leave a marine behind. Of course I didn’t mind. It was a beautiful gesture from a man himself who was medically discharged from the Marine Corps. I didn’t get his name in the turmoil of everything going on, but I have the utmost respect, privilege, and honor for having been in his company for this couple hours.
