ROCKOLLECTIONS: MONTEREY POP AT 54 PT.1
Yeah I know I am late, I got stuck in a River.
Last week marked the 54th Anniversary of the Monterey Pop Festival, held June 16-18 1967.
As a matter of fact, these will be Reruns of Shows I did 4 years ago- never mind the ones I did in 2007!
So when I say 50...think 54, lol!
For some perspective, this was the beginning of the famous Summer Of Love, and the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper was barely 2 weeks old.
And I was beginning to be consumed by this wonderful Music, the likes of which I had never heard before.
Among the people who put together the Festival in 7 weeks was John Phillips of the Mamas & Papas.
Let’s go back 54 years, and have him give the introduction to the weekend and present what might be a surprising Opening Act.
And go from there.

she burned out. I read up on her, because I believe she had one of the greatest female rock voices ever. But, the pressure ate her up, she drank more than Janis, and the last couple of shows Jefferson Airplane did with her, she was almost as incoherent as clueless joe, totally unable to perform.
