During the American Revolution, privately owned warships accounted for 75% of enemy ships sunk or captured -Civilians owned warships, cannon and anything else available to the military. During the Civil War, private volunteer units fought alongside government regulars, all armed with anything available to government forces.
The 2nd Amendment IS common sense. It was written by people who had to fight for their Freedom against the world's greatest superpower of the time, Great Britain. The average American homesteader was BETTER armed than a Regular in King George's army -The military-issue Brown Bess was a smooth bore musket; it was inaccurate and had a short range so that it required a formation of men to fire at other formed ranks. The American homesteader would be armed with something like a Kentucky long rifle; This weapon had much longer range, greater accuracy and more energy at impact than any general issue musket. In that respect, an American civilian carried a far superior weapon than what was available to the military. I agree with the Founding Fathers and their common sense.
