The VA has spent about $13.84 billion trying to modernize veterans’ electronic health records. Today, the Government Accountability Office said 14 of its 18 recommendations for the program still have not been fully implemented.
That includes 12 priority recommendations involving costs, scheduling, management, user adoption, and testing.
GAO says VA resumed planning for new deployments and wants to reach about 170 sites by 2031. But it still has not supplied a detailed cost estimate or enough schedule documentation for GAO to determine whether the plan follows leading practices.
So the government has a $13.84 billion medical-record system, an accelerated rollout, and no full answer on how much the rest of it is going to cost. Very comforting.
