Your “remote U.S. employee” may have been working from another country while somebody in America babysat the laptop. Welcome to the scam version of work from home.
The Justice Department said two U.S. citizens were sentenced for hosting computers at their homes so North Korean IT workers could appear to be working inside the United States.
The workers allegedly used remote-desktop software to operate those laptops from overseas. The scheme affected nearly 70 U.S. companies and brought in more than $1.2 million for North Korea, according to prosecutors.
It was not a paperwork issue. Companies were reportedly hiring people they believed were local, then shipping access to their networks straight into a sanctioned regime.
Apparently “fully remote” now includes “possibly working for North Korea.”
