On September 1, Danish researcher Poul Thorsen pleaded guilty to wire fraud after being extradited to the United States, according to the Justice Department.
Prosecutors said he diverted more than $1 million in CDC grant money awarded for autism research. Fraudulent invoices reportedly sent money to personal accounts rather than the CDC.
The Justice Department said he used the money for a home in Atlanta, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and vehicles. An arrest warrant was issued in 2011, and he avoided capture for more than 14 years.
That is a long time for public research money to be doing laps on a Harley.
